Barney - Fire up the M1
What better start could there be to 2012 than unwrapping the Classic Heroes M1 to prepare it for another action packed year of fun and thrills.
We have wanted an M1 for our own collection for some years and have scoured the motoring world for a really great example. We have high standards at Classic Heroes and along the way we rejected many M1s that we felt were just not good enough.
Our hard work and diligence paid off when we were delighted to buy this exceptionally original and low mileage (36,000 KM) M1 last year from only it’s third owner. He bought the car in 1984 and had mostly kept it under lock and key in his own private museum.
We particularly wanted a Nacht Blau example as only 59 road cars were built in this stunning dark blue which shows those spectacular 70’s supercar lines off so well.
As you would expect, the Classic Heroes’ M1 is really on the button and we have enjoyed some great trips out One of the best was the run to the BMW Car Club festival at Gaydon, where it quickly drew everybody’s attention and proved a huge hit with fellow enthusiasts.
Our M1 is now going through the workshop for its full inspection and programme of works. We very carefully inspected the car prior to purchase paying particular attention to the space frame which can suffer from corrosion and carefully inspecting the dry sump oil system to ensure no corrosion was found in the oil tank.
This cars’ integrity is second to none but it is now time for the all important preventative maintenance. We shall be carrying out a major service including:-
Valve clearances
New wheel badges
Brake calipers inspection
New brake fluid and anti-freeze
New water pump
Replace all fuel hoses
Replace coolant hoses
Rebuild air conditioning compressor and re-gas system
Replace battery with BMW version and replace battery clamp
Replace earth lead
Inspect distributor cap and rotor arm
Ceramic coat the exhaust manifold
Replace all tyres
Rebuild passenger door lock barrel
Replace exhaust rubbers
And, for that final special touch………………..
Fit an original radio and an original set of overmats.
We will have the car ready for events this summer and look forward to seeing many of our customers and friends when we are out and about in this very special and iconic car.
