nique. Fascinating. Brutal. Unprecedented. Head-Turner. Beautiful. Just some of the words that over time have been used to describe BMW’s extravagant, 400 BHP, all aluminium Z8 roadster.

Its flamboyant entrance to the model lineup in 1999 certainly turned heads and guaranteed its place as one of the most fascinating cars ever produced by BMW in its near 100 year history. The Z8’s origin and inspiration date back to the 1950’s when Count Albrecht Graf Goetz laid pen to paper and conjured up the beautiful V8 powered BMW 507 roadster. A true 50’s style icon that reeked of glamour, style and celebrity which now changes hands for upwards of £1,500,000.

Back in the mid 1990’s BMW were looking for a new range topper. Something that would turn heads, pay homage to its history but also showcase the technology and brutal power on-tap from its famed M division. Enter……… stage left, the BMW Z8.

This particular example is very well known to us all at Classic Heroes. We have in the past carried out very thorough yearly inspections of the car to ensure that she wanted for nothing.

The owner, a great chum of Classic Heroes, has had the car as part of his collection. This Z8 has lived alongside his BMW E30 M3, M635 CSI, Datsun 240Z, BMW 2500 E3, Alfasud, Renault Alpine and Alfa Romeo 8C.  He is a true, old school car nut and his car collection only ever features the best examples available and all want for nothing.

This Z8 roadster was first registered 28/06/2002 and has had 3 fastidious previous owners. Now having covered only 45,500 miles and featuring a full BMW main agent service history, supported by a comprehensive document file, this exceptional example is now offered for sale.

The car comes with the factory hard top, wind deflector and the original Motorola mobile flip phone and is finished in titan silver with contrasting soft red and black leather interior.

The Z8’s specification was particularly impressive. The 4941cc V8, quad cam, 32-valve with double variable valve timing (Vanos), is lifted from the E39 M5 and delivers 400bhp at 6,600rpm with 500 Nm of torque. Power is delivered through the E39 M5, 6 speed manual gearbox and a 3.38:1 differential.  All aluminum space frame chassis with MacPherson struts up front and multi-link rear axle make the Z8 an impressive Jekyll and Hyde.  A clever blend of cruising roadster with supercar grunt.

At just 4400mm in length, the Z8 is not only shorter than a Porsche 911 it is also brutally fast; much quicker in fact than the E39 M5. Whilst limited to 155 mph standard cars have been known to exceed 160 mph.

All in all, BMW built a total 5,703 Z8’s between 2000 and 2003. Of these 3,160 were built to EU specification and 2,543 were built for the US market. Also included in these figures are 555 chassis that were delivered to Alpina and built between 2002 and 2003.
