I remember a friend who bought an M Roadster brand new exclaiming, “It’s fantastic, a modern AC Cobra”. I have never heard a better description for BMWs exciting M Roadster.
The M Roadster is front engined, with rear wheel drive and masses of grunt. The handling is exciting, mixed with totally affordable running costs, usability and turnkey motoring. What more could a car nut ask for?
In 1996 BMW felt the Z3 needed to appeal to a more Motorsport focused audience and BMW Motorsport were called upon to put some excitement into the car. The Z3 M Roadster was unveiled at the 1996 Geneva motor show and was looked upon very favourably by the general public.
Full production started in September that year. The body shells were built in the new Spartanburg factory while the engines and transmissions where built at M in Munich and shipped to the States ready for final assembly.

The first European models featured the 3.2 litre 24 valve twin cam S50 motor from the E36 M3 Evo and produced 321 bhp. The suspension geometry was changed along with a wider front and rear track, strengthened and modified sub-frames with reinforced trailing arms and Motorsport springs and dampers fitted with bigger anti-roll bars. Motorsport brakes and wider 17” Motorsport wheels were used. A 25% limited slip differential was standard. Motorsport steering wheel, oval rear view mirror, M clocks, and other interior upgrades were featured. The exterior was enhanced with new spoilers, grills, twin exhaust tail pipes and Motorsport mirrors giving the new M Roadster a stunning exterior appearance.
With less than 1000 cars produced in right hand drive we feel that this is the last of the truly quirky Motorsport driver’s cars.
