e are often offered E36 M3s for stock and they are usually sent packing. They just do not meet our strict criteria. Like all cars they go through that stage of life when value tends to attract the hooligan. Now, there is a touch of the automotive hooligan in me but my cars are beautifully cared for.
Sadly, most E36 M3’s have covered intergalactic mileage, fallen into the wrong hands, and proper age-related maintenance is distinctly lacking. We are also often guilty of forgetting the age of these cars. We are all getting older and it feels like only yesterday that the E36 M3 was launched. I am 49 years old but was made to feel ancient by a father and son who visited us in their 3.0 litre E36 M3. Dad took a call and I was left reminiscing about all things M3 with his son. Now, this guy was a foot taller than me, built like a brick privy and captain of the university rugby team. When Dad came off the phone, he chuckled and pointed out that the car was four years older than his son. I could literally see my paunch expanding and feel the grey hair sprouting.

I am told often on the phone that “my car is the best you will find” and I generally take this with a pinch of salt. So, when the guys in the workshop came to my office and said you need to see underneath this car, I was expecting to see the normal rusty brake and fuel pipes, engine oil leaks, perished rubber and carefully covered up corrosion. Instead, I was standing under one of the best E36 M3s we have seen in a very long time. The condition was superb and the level of maintenance and preventive work was extraordinary. What a delight, I could not wait to driver it! It bought back great memories.
I am a particular fan of the E36 M3 Saloon. Those of you who know and remember my dad will also remember his black E36 M3 saloon. He could never find a car to replace everything it offered him and so ran it to a staggering 275,000 miles before he parted with it. The car still lives on today!
The E34 M5 was a superb car but it always felt slightly big to me after my lovely E28 M5. When BMW launched the E36 M3 saloon, I actually felt it gave me everything I wanted from an extremely high performance 4 door saloon car.
The 3.2 litre version of the M3 was labelled as the Evo by BMW GBs marketing men. The saloon version of the M3 Evo was launched in right hand drive during November 1995. Although very similar to the 3.0 litre version, the car featured the more powerful 321 bhp, twin Vanos 3.2 litre engine, 6 speed manual gearbox, larger front brakes, subtly changed suspension geometry, firmer springs and dampers and some faint trim upgrades. Only 694 of these Evo saloons were built
The exceptional condition and very low mileage (61,000 miles) on this particular car, is due to having been on Jersey until 2014. We have been responsible for the care of the car for the last two owners, for whom the car was part of their car collections.
Built in June 1996 and first registered by Jacksons BMW on Jersey on the 1st August 1996. The car has a complete service history from new and supporting document file. It is supplied with all the original handbooks, service book, wallet, tools and keys. Even the original front screen with running in sticker is still present.

The last two owners, who both purchased the car from us, have continued with a no expense spared programme of work to ensure all the age related and preventive maintenance was taken care of. New Michelin Pilot Sports all round, four brand new wheels, new clutch, new braided brake lines all round, new discs and pads all round, new shock absorbers, new diff seals, new suspension bushes, all new fluids, front and rear bumpers painted, new exterior black trim, new badges and even and original BMW radio sourced and fitted to ensure total originality. The body shell has been cleaned and carefully treated with clear cavity wax and supported by a photographic record.
The car has passed through the workshop for our normal sales checks. Before leaving us it will benefit from a PDI, Inspection I service, new coolant, new brake fluid, new MOT and air conditioning service.
A truly phenomenal amount of motor car for the money. Four doors, 30 MPG, 321 bhp, rear wheel drive, front engine, hooligans delight mixed with usability and affordable running costs. A true “have your cake and eat it” modern classic.
