BMW M635 CSI

NOW SOLD

race, pace, and with plenty of go. M-Power at its most elegant. Rare too, just 524 right hand drive examples were produced between 1984 - 1989.

The Motorsport version of the already highly successful 635 CSi benefitted from the wonderful 24 valve, twin cam engine originally developed as the heart of the M1 supercar. Other special features included the 5-speed Getrag sport gearbox, Motorsport springs and roll bars blended with Bilstein Sport dampers, larger 4 pot front brakes, larger wheels, and a limited slip differential.

Unique amongst sports coupes, the very expensive M635 offered an unrivalled blend of exclusivity, hand built quality, and practicality, in combination with real high performance. Four luxurious ‘proper’ seats, a commodious boot and a lavish array of creature comforts provide that practicality whilst the much revered, 286bhp M88 engine delivers the real excitement.

A true sporting thoroughbred, the M6 will sprint to 60mph in six seconds and, in an awesome display of torque, pull cleanly and increasingly rapidly from 25mph to 158mph in fifth gear. Overtaking ability is equally impressive with the dash from 30-70mph taking just 5.5 seconds. The M635 must surely rank as the ultimate everyday supercar – blindingly quick and satisfying on the twisty bits, effortlessly refined as a motorway mile-eater, and uncomplainingly efficient whether tottering to Tesco’s, or heading for the south of France.

Finding an unmolested M6 with this sort of relatively low mileage and a complete and stamped service history from new is very hard now.  The car is low owners having had just 4 keepers, and this particular M6 is very well known to me as I have been involved with the advice and care of this car since 2006, when she had covered only 59,000 miles.

Having become too old to drive, the third person to own the car approached me about rehoming his beloved M6.  A most interesting man, Godfrey Argent ARPS was a highly respected portrait photographer with a fascinating career. Photographer to the Royal family, the stars, and the establishment, and then later appointed official photographer to the National Photographic Record at the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Society. The Queen, The Prince of Wales, Princess Anne, Lord Mountbatten, Peter Sellers, Hayley Mills, David Hockney, and most members of Parliament and the Establishment, these were just a few of the faces that sat in front of his camera.

Unsurprisingly it did not take long to find a suitable 4th owner, and by some strange quirk of fate this guy’s love of photography, and also being a member of the Royal Photographic Society, maybe meant that Godfrey’s elegant car was destined to find him. Not just a loyal customer, but also a good friend and serious car nut, his love of cars started in the 60’s with a collection of highly modified Mini’s, hot Mk1 Cortina’s, and an original Fiat 500 with a 1500cc VW engine installed, all this before we met and I started to look after his lovely 735 and E30 M3.  Whilst in his care, this M6 was featured by Classic Cars as an excellent example of one of the BMW Motorsport variants. Now retired he and his wife travel extensively meaning the M6 must find its lucky 5th owner to continue to love and appreciate her fine qualities.

During his care the car has been maintained superbly and has benefitted from a beautiful set of 17” BBS split rim wheels. These wheels are recommended by us to remove the now rather difficult to find, expensive, dated and noisy metric Michelin TRX tyres.  The front brakes have also been updated.  M6 owners often complained that the brakes felt slightly dated and wooden in feel for a car of 286 bhp.  Our suggested Brembo brake upgrade has been installed.
