Just 524 right-hand-drive examples were built between 1984 and 1989. Unique amongst sports coupes, the M635 offers an unrivalled blend of exclusivity, build quality, practicality and performance. Four ‘proper’ seats, a commodious boot and a lavish array of creature comforts all added to the practicality whilst the much revered 3.5 litre 24-valve 286bhp engine delivered the excitement. This sporting thoroughbred could sprint to sixty in six seconds and, in an awesome display of torque, pull smoothly and increasingly rapidly from 25mph to 158mph in fifth gear. Overtaking ability was equally impressive with 30-70mph taking a mere 5.5 seconds. A Getrag sport gearbox (no auto option), limited slip diff, Bilstein gas-filled dampers, Motorsport springs, larger roll bars, bigger front ventilated discs with M1-spec 4-pot calipers, larger 415mm TRX wheels, wheel arch extensions with front and rear spoilers are all testimony to a proud racing heritage.

June 1987 saw the introduction of the Highline model. The highline was available in both standard 635 and M635 models and took the E24 model range to new heights in luxury. With the introduction of the lavish full leather interiors including headlining, dash, console, door cards and parcel shelf, electric seats as standard and later spec impact bumpers.

The Highline is now recognised as the most desirable of all the e24 models. The touring capability of this superb coupe still impresses today. It has a superbly appointed cabin, with the trademark 70’ & 80’s BMW ‘acres of glass’ for superb vision mixed with superb handling and that great old fashioned blend of front engined rear wheel drive motoring.

History

We are thrilled to be asked to find a new home for this amazing M6 especially as it has been known to us for twenty two years. During that time we have sold and maintained the car for most of the owners.

It has now covered 136,000 miles in the hands of 8 owners over its twenty five year life. The car is in stunning condition having had a continual and lavish programme of maintenance over the years and more recently having benefitted from a no expense spared, age related renovation.

The service history is 100% complete, documented and stamped in the original service book and it comes with every MOT since 1993 and 31,000 miles. Every invoice is filed with the car and these date back to 1991 with only 21,000 miles. The car also comes with all the original tools, service book, wallet, handbooks, manuals, first aid kit and warning triangle.

Originally sold by Woods Of Bournemouth on the 2nd November 1988, we first saw and drove this car when it was only six years old back in 1994 with about 60,000 miles. We bought the car from the third owner and sold it to a couple who became great friends. During the six years they owned the car we were very involved with the care and upkeep. They were fastidious about the car’s care and during their ownership they lavished £16,500 on the car including the replacement of the timing chain and head gasket at 103,000 miles in July 2000.

In December 2002 with 113,000 miles we sold the car to the 5th owner who during his 3 year ownership spent a further £1600 detailing the car.

In 2005 and now with 119,000 miles we sold the car to the 6th owner who only kept it for one year and we were then asked to sell the car again.

In 2006 the car was sold to a member of the management at Rydale BMW with 123,000 miles. It was enjoyed thoroughly by this BMW Dealer and new owner who also used the car for display and promotion purposes. The current owners purchased the car in 2009 with 129,000 miles to add to their splendid classic car collection.

During their ownership the car went through an incredibly detailed and lavish programme of work. This work was both preventive and cosmetic. The car had to be 100% usable with total reliability but also be stunning cosmetically so as to take pride of place in the collection. The bodywork has been fully restored to a stunning finish and has benefitted from new front wings, new rear panel and new rear chassis legs before being re-sprayed in the stunning original Diamond black.

The car was then re-assembled with every bit of new trim that was required to give it an ‘as new’ look. New bumper pads, bumper trims, gutter trims, waist mouldings, wipers, door top trims, badges, lenses, body and door seals. The interior has been detailed to a very high level and new over mats finish the cabin off.

Mechanically the car was inspected and any age related maintenance carried out. The engine was stripped and internally inspected, the air conditioning has been rebuilt with new condenser and received dryer, brakes overhauled, calipers rebuilt, gearlever bushes replaced, new prop shaft coupling, new air flow meter, new throttle cable and temperature switch to name a few areas.

Diamond Black BMW M6 Highline

y any standards an M635 was an expensive car back in 1988. At a list price of £44,411.85 it was actually more expensive than the average price of a UK house. Not just that, it represented M-Power at its most elegant and was extremely rare to boot.
