Mercedes-Benz 500 SLC, Only 33,500 miles

NOW SOLD

1971 saw Intel release the World’s first Microprocessor, Apollo 14 returning to Earth, Cigarette advertisements banned from TV and Mercedes-Benz launch the production of the luxury grand touring range, the R107 SL & C107 SLC.

The R107 (SL) was a 2 seater convertible roadster with the option of having a foldable rear bench seat arrangement. The C107 was a hard top Coupé based on the SL and was affectionately known as the SL Coupé (model SLC). It was 10 inches longer than the SL to accommodate the more comfortable fixed rear seats.

The Mercedes-Benz R107 was produced from 1971 through to 1989 and was the second longest single series vehicle produced by the firm, besides the G-Class.

There were a wide variety of engine capacities available. These ranged from a 2.6 litre straight six to a massive 5.6 litre V8. Both automatic and manual transmissions were available. A five-speed manual transmission was provided for the 280 and 300 SL/SLC line. Other unique features included trademark quad headlamps and notably large front and rear bumpers. Currently, the 500 SL and its 5.0-litre engine is still the fastest production model within the R107 line. It was able to reach a top speed of 225 kilometres per hour (140 miles per hour).

In September 1977 the 450 SLC 5.0 joined the line-up. This was a homologation version of the big coupé, featuring a new all-aluminium five litre V8, aluminium alloy bonnet and boot-lid, and a black rubber rear spoiler, along with a small front-lip spoiler. The 450SLC 5.0 was produced in order to homologate the SLC for the 1978 World Rally Championship.

In 1980 the production of the 350 and 450 SLC models ceased and the new and face-lifted versions 380 SLC and 500 SLC were born. The 500 SLC was offered with the Mercedes impressive 4973cc V8 which produced an awesome 240bhp. This powerful V8 propelled the car from 0-60 mph in just of 7.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 137 mph.

The production of the 500 SLC discontinued in 1981 and during the 10 years or so of production, a total of 62,888 SLCs were made, 1,636 were the 450 SLC 5.0 and only 1,133 were the 500 SLC.
