he 996 will be one of those cars. You know the ones. The cars that we so often hear friends saying, “remember when you could buy one of those for the price of a family hack, I should have bought 10 of them when I could”. These were the cars that could be brought for song, on a bit of a whim, and now achieve six figure prices.

Well, the clock is ticking and time is running out. Soon 996 prices will be driven up by a generation of car enthusiasts, who have never known the 911 as an air-cooled brand. This will be the generation whose dads reminisce of two-wheel drive, normally aspirated cars, with a gear-lever and clutch pedal. Those cars that still need driving rather than sitting in a cockpit, on autopilot, being propelled from A - B at warp factor 9 whilst relying on Lane Change Assist.

Superb and revered that the 993 was and still is, the 911 had to evolve and improve. The demands of the modern driver meant it was time for the first major revision to the 911. With such a hard act to follow, the pressure was on. The 996 was born and some of the old Porsche diehards struggled to modernise with the brand. .

It is a written rule that every evolution of the 911 is criticised for loss of character. That criticism fades away when the next model leaves the drawing board. It is with the benefit of hindsight that we can now look back at the 996 and admire. We now see it as a truly great car and realise just how successful that first major revision was. The first generation of 996 offered a great power to weight ratio with 300 bhp and only 1,390 KG.  Exceptional performance whilst the revised suspension gave trustworthy and sure-footed handling whilst retaining the character and charm of a rear engine sports car. The best of both worlds for the enthusiast. A blend of performance and usability lifted the 911 to new heights of accomplishment.

This 996 Carrera 2 features a superbly documented, full-service history from new and has covered only 77,000 miles.  Arguably the best specification, being Arctic silver, full Metropole blue leather, sports seats, factory supplied Aero kit and the all-important manual gearbox. The car is very well known to us at Classic Heroes and our team have worked closely with the owner to prepare a schedule of preventive and cosmetic work whilst sympathetically bespoking the car to produce the perfect 911 to suit his high standards and desires. The car was to want for nothing!

The document file is far too large to list it all here but here is a summary of work carried out over the last 20,000 miles.

Engine strip, inspection and reassembly with new IMS bearing, main bearings, big end bearings, timing chain and variable valve timing solenoid. New clutch. New radiators and A/C condensers. There is no doubt that this 996 represents one of the most fastidiously cared for examples in existence.  A credit to the owner who wished to create the perfect 996. It is our opinion, he cracked it!

The 996 was the victim of its own success. Finding examples to this standard that are 100% corrosion free and mechanically future-proofed, guaranteeing turn key motoring for the next owner, is now almost impossible. We see many examples and most are now ready for that big age-related maintenance birthday and that comes at quite price tag.

The car will be handed over to the lucky new owner with all the original manuals, service wallet, handbooks, service book, original radio and all original keys. The large document file is testament to the owner’s quest for perfection and contains MOTs back to 2004, every invoice back to the first service in 2000 with only 2,986 miles
