BMW E30 ALPINA C2 - 2.7                                                             Now Sold

ack in the 1990’s we enjoyed looking after many Alpina C2 2.7s in all their body designs reasonably often and looked after many. Who would have thought that these cars would be so tricky to find twenty years later. We just took these things for granted.

We still to this day look after a few C2 2.5s and 2.7s but rarely have an example offered to us for sale. When we do they are often just too tired, high mileage, patchy history, rusty or too heavily modified for us to put our name to.

This makes an excellent unmolested C2 2.7 in this condition even more exciting. Driving her was a fantastic trip back in time.

B

This particular C2 2.7 was built to an incredibly high specification and supplied new by L & C BMW on 20th August 1989. The car comes with all the original handbooks, manuals, wallet and a fully stamped service book. The service history is 100% complete and was last serviced by BMW Coppers at 90,000 miles in September 2012. The car even comes with the original L & C Alpina C2 pricelist and specification sheets.

The Alpina C2 2.7 was only available from two UK dealers at this time. Sytner of Nottingham or L & C BMW of Tunbridge Wells. It was possible to buy the more modest C2 2.5 conversion with 190bhp for £3,995 plus VAT or for the customer craving even higher performance the C 2 2.7 litre conversion was available for a staggering £8,645 plus VAT, an amazing amount of money in 1989.

The full 2.7 conversion included a 2693cc engine conversion taking it to 210 BHP at 5800 rpm with 213 lb ft of torque, Alpina mapped Bosch Motronic ignition and injection, full Alpina exhaust system, Alpina valved Bilstein shocks with Alpina progressive rate springs, Alpina 7×16” front wheels with 205/55/16 tyres and Alpina 8×16” rear wheels with 225/45/16 tyres, Alpina front spoiler, Alpina rear spoiler, Alpina side skirts, Alpina and C2 2.7 badges, Alpina gear knob, Alpina steering wheel and Alpina numbered dash plaque.

The performance was an outstanding 143 MPH top speed and 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. Many purists consider the C 2 2.7 to be the ultimate road going E30, still featuring the lovely M20 straight six engine and mixed with Alpina’s subtle blend of performance motoring for the true sporting enthusiast but with that lovely Alpina usability.

Being a big fan of fast estate cars this incredibly rare C2 2.7 Touring put a smile on my face. Driving her was a treat and a fantastic trip back in time to my early days in this business. Nobody knows exactly how many Touring versions were built but we definitely know it was a handful. This is made even more exciting buy the most desirable colour combination and an excellent specification.

The current owner is a serial BMW owner for the last 30 years and embarked on a long search to find a suitable C2 2.7 Touring and finally in 2006 found the car that ticked all his boxes. As an ex-BMW mechanic he was fussy. He then embarked on a no expense spared program of age related and preventive maintenance to ensure that he would enjoy the car with turnkey reliability but most importantly she was preserved for many, many years to come. The cost of this work far exceeds the value of the car. Far too much to list here but I look forward to discussing it on the phone. The perfect proof that mileage is not everything. It’s down to the level of care.

The history file is fantastic. Every document back to the purchase invoice to the second owner when only 6 months old and with only 5,000 miles. Every service invoice since 14,369 Miles in January 1990. Original build sheet, every MOT since new, original Alpina parts catalogue, letter from Sytner BMW confirming she is a genuine Alpina C2 2.7 Touring, and all original manuals and service wallet support this super history file.
